The groundbreaking historical drama based on the life of Jesus, The Chosen, is a show like you’ve never seen before, and it’s helping people connect to the Gospel in an entirely new way.
Season One of The Chosen introduces Jesus and the calling of His disciples. A charismatic fisherman drowning in debt, a troubled woman wrestling with real demons. A gifted publican ostracized by his family and his people. A religious leader struggling with his beliefs. See Jesus through the eyes of those that met him.
Will you watch Season One with us?
“Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his teaching the islands will put their hope.” (Isaiah 42:1-4)
Dallas Jenkins’ The Chosen has created a lot of buzz in recent years, and it is a breath of fresh air for those who are looking for better-quality, authentic and contemporary Bible narratives on screen. We can’t wait to watch and discuss the first season with you!
Here are some questions you might like to consider before we start:
WHAT IS THE CHOSEN?
The Chosen is a groundbreaking historical drama based on the life of Jesus, seen through the eyes of those who knew Him. Set against the backdrop of Jewish oppression in first-century Israel, this multi-season show shares an authentic and intimate look at Jesus's revolutionary life and teachings. Many Bible-based movies and mini-series have been filmed over the years, but this is the first binge-watchable show where you can really invest in the characters and their life story. The Chosen is financed, distributed, and produced outside Hollywood and it is the number-one highest crowd-funded media project in history. The series is winning over audiences around the world. It has a 9.8 / 10 average rating on IMDB and a 99 percent average audience score on RottenTomatoes.
IS THE CHOSEN BIBLICALLY FAITHFUL AND THEOLOGICALLY RELIABLE?
With help from a team of expert consultants - including a New Testament scholar and a messianic Jewish rabbi, both conservative theologians and historians - the show is faithful to Scripture and careful to avoid theological or historical errors.
The Chosen was never meant to replace or alter the biblical account of Jesus’ story, but it definitely fills in some gaps with historical data and artistic imagination. The director and co-writers have no desire to mess with Scripture or make some sort of new theological point. They aim to tell biblical stories in a way that makes the moments in Scripture even more impactful. Ministers and preachers regularly share historical context and expound on the personalities of the people involved in Biblical stories. The Chosen does the same, only through the different medium of filmmaking.
“The Chosen understands that filling in these characters requires some speculation about the type of people they were, sketching out the details of their lives in a way that’s consistent with but goes beyond what’s said of them in Scripture. This is always the most controversial-but-necessary part of any movie/TV version of the Bible—especially as it relates to Jesus—but The Chosen does an admirable job walking the line between accuracy and watchability…. In these times of global anxiety and mounting despair, the hope Jesus offers is greatly needed. If The Chosen helps remind us of that hope, or introduces it to some audiences for the first time, then that alone is reason for us to cheer its success and share it with others.”
Brett McCracken, a senior editor and director of communications at The Gospel Coalition (https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/four-reasons-chosen-works/)
WHY IS THE CHOSEN SO MOVING AND POPULAR?
The Chosen presents us with the same stories we know so well from the Bible with the help of authentic, aesthetically pleasing and often emotional sounds and images. The producers use the power of motion pictures to powerfully appeal to our senses. For example, they take a simple phrase from the Bible, like Jesus got tired (John 4:6) and show us what that might have looked and felt like. Through the imaginary backstories of people’s lives who had extraordinary encounters with Jesus and experienced his healing power, these stories feel even more moving and relatable to us.
“Thank you for telling the old, old story in an impossible fresh way.”
Joni Eareckson Tada, Christian author and radio host
